The popular carnival parade takes place every year in the old town of Tübingen during the Swabian-Alemannic carnival season. As soon as the symbolic jester's tree of the Tübingen carnival procession stands in front of the town hall, the start of carnival in Tübingen is heralded. 85 traditional jesters, 5.000 elaborately dressed-up jesters and 42 bands - the Swabian-Alemannic carnival in Tübingen has been a popular tradition in south-western Germany since the 20th century. The events that take place during this time are a popular meeting place for young and old alike.
Contrary to the Rhineland carnival, the Swabian-Alemannic carnival only begins after the Christmas holidays, i.e. year after year on January 6. While the preparations are made at the beginning - the dusting off of the previous year's dirt from the jester's clothes and the assembly of the costumes - the highlight of the carnival period takes place on Schmotziger Dunnschtig. On the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, numerous fun parades, balls and traditional evenings are on the program. Not to be forgotten are the typical Fasnetsküchle (carnival dances), which bring the festive 5th season to life. To preserve this lively tradition, the Swabian-Alemannic carnival was added to the national list of intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.
